The Client
Our client is an independent public relations agency specialising in the health and beauty sector. They have been established for over 15 years and have a number of high profile retail and luxury brand clients.
The client had outgrown their server and required a significant increase in data storage. ITD were engaged to plan and implement the required upgrade and modify the backup processes and policies to ensure data security.
The Challenge
Our client needed to upgrade their server following a period of rapid growth. IT forward planning had been minimal and they were fast outgrowing their data storage.
The existing backup solution was also a cause for concern and needed to be reviewed.
Our Approach
• After an inventory and review of the existing IT infrastructure, we recommended that our client buy out their leased equipment. The server was still operational and we were able to negotiate an extended warranty. The server was also suitable for the space available, although the client was intending to move offices in 2 years' time. As part of our long term IT strategy for the client we advised that a rack-mounted server solution should be acquired in the event of this move.
• We recommended a network attached storage (NAS) device to increase data storage capacity and therefore improve on the existing infrastructure. We sourced, configured and installed this equipment, then tested it thoroughly before it went live.
• The client was generating more data than their backup process was designed to handle. We installed and configured new backup software and initiated a backup policy which allowed for safely storing 3TB of data. We also recommended that a monthly backup tape should be stored off site.
• In line with our client’s requirements, we created a user fun drive to temporarily store users’ pictures and videos. We separated this drive from the monthly backup process to avoid non-essential data being backed up.
The Results
ITD were able to make use of the existing IT infrastructure and improve the server estate significantly. We increased data storage. A revised backup process provided peace of mind and increased security.
